Considering Assisted Living During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Our country is dealing with a pandemic, the likes of which nobody has seen before. This makes it a precarious time for senior citizens. Staying safe and limiting exposure is of utmost importance while balancing the need for assistance with many basics of living. Going to the grocery store or refilling a prescription now poses a challenge for those who should not be taking these risks. Family and friends can oftentimes assist with these errands, but that’s not always possible. There is also the concern of whether those family members and friends are socially distancing and staying safe themselves.
Additional challenges can include finding help for maintenance, housekeeping, or personal care such as bathing and dressing. It is times like these that can cause “comfortable at home” to become “neglected at home”, especially when the senior is feeling the effects of solitude and isolation. The good news is that assisted living communities are a great alternative for keeping seniors safe.
There has been plenty of news coverage about outbreaks in community care settings. These stories are scary, but it is important to remember that 95% of Assisted Living Communities in Oregon remain free of the Coronavirus. Raleigh Hills Assisted Living is following all the guidelines presented by the State of Oregon and have established our own protocols above and beyond the state guidelines to keep our residents safe. We are continuing to train staff in preventative measures to minimize the chances of the virus entering our community. Our staff is maintaining the highest standards for prevention both in our community and in their personal lives to keep everyone safe. We plan to stay in front of things rather than reacting once a problem arises. Some of the protocols we have implemented include:
All staff and outside agency personnel are required to wear masks at all times when in the building.
All staff and outside agency personnel are screened upon entering for signs and symptoms of illness, including having their temperature taken.
Common area seating has been arranged to accommodate social distancing.
Increased cleaning and disinfecting schedules.
Daily monitoring of all residents for signs and symptoms of illness.
